Just ask rancher John Ladd of Arizona.
His
San Jose Ranch sits right on the Arizona-Mexico line, ten and a half
miles of land stretching from the town of Naco west toward the San Pedro
River. Border Patrol has three camera towers on his property, an
eye-in-the-sky Cyclops, and sensors hidden in the desert shrubs that
activate when smugglers pass. A pedestrian fence (pictured below)
blocks the entire ten and a half miles.
None of these security measures have worked.
Since
the end of February, Ladd has had at least nine drug drive-throughs
across his land involving 21 trucks. The smugglers cut the mesh border
fence and pull it down, then ramp over the vehicle barrier just inside it. In most cases they tack-weld the fence back up and brush out tracks to disguise the incursion.
Eight of these episodes occurred in broad daylight, and in two of them the smugglers passed within 50 feet of a camera tower.
The chaos building south of our border, and increasingly spilling over into the heartland of the US, is most definitely a foreign-policy issue, as well as a domestic issue.
Obama's back-door amnesty by executive order this summer, giving the 'get-out-of-jail-free' card to hundreds of thousands of illegals only worsens the situation. Even in OS's county, two days' drive from the border, illegals have been camped here for years, awaiting the Next Amnesty.
This only creates more chaos, giving incentive to flout the law, breaking down civil society.
Which, after all, is the goal of the present administration.
Chaos creates opportunity.

'Turn Back South': Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever Blows The Whistle About DHS Refusal To Enforce The Southern Border
The mail supporting his assertions has been flooding in, and the correspondents tell on consistent story: DHS wants to cook the statistics to make it appear the illegal immigration problem is improving, when in fact it is deteriorating.
An Arizona sheriff says he has been flooded with calls and emails of support from local and federal agents who back his claims that the U.S. Border Patrol has effectively ordered them to stop apprehending illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexican border.

Local 2544, the Tucson branch of the National Border Patrol Council union, has also come out in support of Dever, and posted this message on their website after the FoxNews.com report.
“Sheriff Dever is right. We have seen so many slick shenanigans pulled in regards to 'got-aways' and entry numbers that at times it seems David Copperfield is running the Border Patrol. Creating the illusion that all is well and you can start having family picnics in the areas where we work has been going on far too long. Has there been improvement in some areas? Absolutely. Is the border anywhere near 'under control'? Absolutely not. Do some in management play games with numbers and cater to the wishes of politicians like Janet Napolitano and David Aguilar? Resoundingly, yes. Time for the foolish political games to stop.”
There are, of course, the standard spluttering indignant denials from DHS. They are a regular part of the Kabuki Theater that now passes for governance in a country run by children.
The worst damage of all is to the public trust. Every time this happens, the pressure washer of rank dishonesty blows more mortar from between the bricks of the culture.
It's become so common, we've become innured, and that is a dangerous state in which to live.

Just Another Day For Big Sis and DHS
Stonewalling FOIA request for results of a DHS investigation of the case of an illegal alien, with two DUI's, never deported, who drove drunk again, and killed a nun.
Since he was smuggled in as a child, he would be one of those eligible to remain under the terms of the DREAM act pushed by Harry Reid.
Wonder if the stonewall coincided with the need to have zero bad news whilst trying to flog this legislation through?

Weapons Caches Found In Mexic0/US Border Cities/Drug Busts Of Mexican Operation In Atlanta
This is not about race, or ethnicity.
This is about safety, the safety of people on both sides of the border. Everyday, normal people, who work and raise families and and go to church and school and don't have any involvement with the drug culture.
That is to say, most of us.

Mexican Marines seized a load of 230 grenades of 40 mm. caliber, a weapon also used by NATO forces, and of a destructive power considered as “very high.”
Also seized were 64,950 rounds of ammunition and either 10 or 17 firearms (the reports contradict each other). The exact location of the house where all this was found was not disclosed, and it was only identified as a “safe house” for the “Zetas” criminal group in the city of Matamoros (right across the Rio Grande River from Brownsville, Texas.)
And up that river, in Piedras Negras, Coahuila (across from Eagle Pass, Texas) military personnel seized 202 kilos of weed, 5 long barrel firearms, 2 handguns, 3 hand grenades and 265 rounds of ammo. Also found elsewhere in the same town: 6,434 kilos of marihuana, and empty boxes of grenades and ammunition.

The federal government is risking the lives of innocents on both sides of the border.

Obama Cedes Portions Of Interstate 8 In Arizona To The Drug Cartels; It's A Local Issue...
Hmmm....nice little state you got here. It'd be a shame if it were to, say, get overrun with criminals and the like. Right, Gino? Right, Vito? A cryin' shame.
From today's Washington Times:
The federal government recently posted signs along Interstate 8 in the Vekol Valley warning travelers the area is unsafe because of drug and alien smugglers. The signs were posted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) along a 60-mile stretch of Interstate 8 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend, warning travelers they are entering an "active drug- and human-smuggling area" and may encounter "armed criminals and smuggling vehicles traveling at high rates of speed."
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, whose county includes the valley, told The Washington Times earlier this month that Mexican drug cartels have posted scouts on the high points around the valley to control movement in the area. He said they have radios, optics and "night-vision goggles as good as anything law enforcement has."
"This is going on here in Arizona … 30 miles from the fifth-largest city in the United States," he said.
The sheriff said he asked the Obama administration for 3,000 National Guard soldiers to patrol the border, but got 15 signs along Interstate 8 instead.
ObamaBob claims that everyone loves his boss, and that the election will hinge on 'local issues', not having to to with The Beloved Leader. OS suspects that folks in Arizona might consider having a squad of trained Mexican assassins at large just might meet the definition of a local issue.

While We're Being Lectured By The Mexicans About Our Poor Treatment Of Illegal Aliens...

According to Mexico’s Center for Human Rights of Migrants (CNDH), Mexico operates on a double standard in regards to the treatment of undocumented migrants. In a communique issued from Cd. Juarez, the organization pointed out that while the Mexican government demands respect for their countrymen in the US, it violates the human rights of Central and South Americans in Mexico. In reference to the recent massacre of 72 people in Tamaulipas, what happened there is only a reflection of the vulnerability of migrants in Mexico. Just this past May, they point out, the United Nation’s Human Rights Council expressed surprise at the growing xenophobia, aggressions, tortures, anti-migrant laws and even murders suffered by undocumented Central and South Americans in their transit through Mexican territory.
One of the most serious problems facing migrants in Mexico today is kidnapping. The CNDH documented the kidnapping of 9,758 undocumented migrants in Mexico between September 2008 and February 2009, more than 1,600 per month. The report also warned that the kidnapping of migrants has become a common practice, usually unpunished and with acts of extreme cruelty, carried out as much by the authorities as by organized crime. The crime is very lucrative. In the total number of cases cited above, the take in those six months was approximately 25 million US dollars.

Meantime, Back On Our Secure Southern Border...
Honest, The Winner Of The 2010 Nobel Peace Prize, His Attorney General, and His Secretary Of Homeland Security all assure us that all is well.

The discovery of two decapitated persons was reported just moments ago, the abandoned bodies found abandoned at Seventh Street and Guadalupe Victoria in the Villa Juarez neighborhood.
At the same time, police reported the discovery of two heads that appear to belong to the the bodies found in Villa Juarez, these being found along the road to Ciudad Delicias, near the Pemex (n.b.Mexico's nationalized oil company) facility.
The bodies were found near the intersection by neighbors who lived nearby, who called the police immediately, who then took charge of the cadavers.
The 'narco-tourism' continued as normal, and within minutes, dozens of persons coverged upon the scene and took pictures with their cell phones.

Actually, OS was looking through El Diario to verify a report of three beheaded corpses located in Sinaloa. He hasn't made it to the Sinaloa page yet, but in a macabre way, it doesn't much matter.
This is where the city of Chihuahua is located. A quick drive up the road to Juarez, and from there to Texas and New Mexico. No worries, ya'll. What could possibly go wrong?
OS, and many millions of other American citizens, would much prefer to not wake up to this sort of news taking place in Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, or Tennessee. Apparently, Obama and Holder are much more sanguine about that prospect, and prefer to expend their energies in a lawsuit against the State of Arizona.

The Obama DOJ v. The State Of Arizona (And The Rest Of The Country)

It's twenty-five pages of assertion that the Federal government in general, and the President in particular, reigns supreme over the states in any matter involving illegal immigration. More breathtakingly, it asserts that the President essentially has the discretion to enforce, or not enforce, the federal law. It all depends on whether he and the Federal government think it is in their best interests.
Sound incredible? HellsBells, ya'll, don't take OS's word for it, read the legalese these scoundrels filed today:

It will conflict with longstanding federal law governing the registration, smuggling, and employment of aliens. It will altogether ignore humanitarian concerns, such as the protections available under federal law for an alien who has a well-founded fear of persecution or who has been the victim of a natural disaster. And it will interfere with vital foreign policy and national security interests by disrupting the United States’ relationship with Mexico and other countries.
In other words, this is about keeping the Mexicans happy! That dog-and-pony show at the White House for Calderon wasn't for nothing, ya'll!

Kagan And Arizona: Leading The Charge Against Enforcement Of The Law
A little bit of digging and surfing, and here we have a nugget of news about Supreme Court nominee Kagan:
Reps. Lamar Smith and Todd Tiahrt think Miss Elena's got some 'splainin' to do, Lucy.
In 2007, the state of Arizona passed an immigration law that allowed it to revoke the business licenses of businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants. This provision was challenged but upheld in both the district court and even the notoriously liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Most recently, the Obama administration decided to challenge the 2007 Arizona immigration law and has asked the Supreme Court to overturn the provision. But what is a little known fact to most Americans is that it was Kagan who was the originator and driving force behind the Obama administration’s decision to ask the Court to overturn the Arizona immigration law. Kagan recently admitted as much in required disclosures to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The administration argued that Arizona’s law revoking the business licenses of businesses that knowingly employ illegal immigrants is unconstitutional. But this argument is completely baseless as the two lower courts already confirmed.
Furthermore, still on the books today is a 1986 federal statute that created penalties for employers that knowingly employ illegal immigrants. Is anyone in the Senate, outside of people like Shelby and Coburn, really paying attention? Lindsay Graham certainly isn't, but he did a pretty good job playing the straight man, feeding Ms. Kagan her opportunity for the one-liner that made it to every evening news show.

Quietly, The Illegals Begin To Exit Arizona
This article in Arizona Central discusses the effect of the departure of illegals in anticipation of the Arizona law coming into effect.
Mr. Rollie Rankin, who built his business upon knowingly building and renting apartments to illegals, is portrayed with sympathy, once again proving the newspaper editors long ago lost their ethical bearings. It was an enterprise deliberately built on breaking laws already in place, with the assumption that the law would never be enforced.
There are similar bills in process in many states, which will be adjusted as the Arizona bill is litigated. As the economy weakens, state budgets tighten, and patience runs out, many states will continue the process of 'demagnetization', and the flow of illegals back home should, finally and blessedly, increase.
In the meantime, the Mexican drug wars claimed yet one more notable victim.
We can't solve Mexico's ills, nor should we try. But we do have the right and responsibility to see that we don't import them.

Senator John Kyl: 'They Want Something In Return Before They'll Do Their Duty'
It's 4:42 long, and is perhaps the clearest portrait yet of the mind and heart of The Winner of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.
Obama and company are deliberately encouraging the chaos on the border in order to hold the country hostage. When Kyl tells his story, you don't hear indignation in the reaction, you hear that collective release of breath that says 'Oh, dear God in heaven, this is my worst fear confirmed...'
In one sector of Arizona, a 94% decrease in illegal immigration, just by employing the laws and policies already enacted. In the next sector over, a tidal wave of illegals, drugs and crime. And they know it, and refuse to act. Obama will let the blood flow until he gets his 'comprehensive immigration reform'. The bodies stack up on both sides of the border in the meantime.

So, What Is Calderon Complaining About, And Why Do The Congressional Dems Cheer For Him?
OS hates to harp on a subject, but he feels this one really matters, and that recent events have been illustrative of the character of our present political leadership.
As everyone who hasn't been in a coma for the past month knows, the State of Arizona decided enough was enough. The Federal government simultaneously claimed jurisdiction over matters involving the southern border of the the US while refusing to enforce immigration law and vigorously defend that border. Arizona has been over-run, and its citizens are being murdered and kidnapped. Arizona, within its constitutional rights, passed a law to deal with the problem.
The indignant outcry was immediate and blood-curdling from the Left, and from the Mexican government. El Presidente addressed the US Congress, denouncing Arizona for having the temerity to insist that people residing within its borders actually be able to demonstrate that they are there legally.

TULTITLN, Mexico — Arizona's new law forcing local police to take a greater role in enforcing immigration law has caused a lot of criticism from Mexico, the largest single source of illegal immigrants in the United States. But in Mexico, illegal immigrants receive terrible treatment from corrupt Mexican authorities, say people involved in the system.
And Mexico has a law that is no different from Arizona's that empowers local police to check the immigration documents of people suspected of not being in the country legally.
"There (in the United States), they'll deport you," Hector Vázquez, an illegal immigrant from Honduras, said as he rested in a makeshift camp with other migrants under a highway bridge in Tultitlán. "In Mexico they'll probably let you go, but they'll beat you up and steal everything you've got first."

Kudos to USA Today for finally standing tall and beginning to tell the truth about Mexico. Most of the mainstream media simply will not begin to tell the truth about this place.
Mexico is violent.
Mexico is breathtakingly corrupt; from the street-corner cop to the Presidency, the entire operation thrives on la Mordida, literally 'The Bite', aka 'The Bribe'.
Mexico has been run from the 1920's by a corrupt oligarchy of politicians, 'labor union leaders', bankers and industrial interests. Until recent years, only one party the PRI, ever held power.
Then, there is the drug trade... The mayor of Cancun, a major resort destination, was arrested just yesterday for trafficking.
So, why do Democrats love Mexico so? Why do they cheer for this craziness, this corruption, this unfree violent culture? Do they see the future there, a fabulously wealthy country in the thrall of an oligarchy that gets to skim that wealth for themselves, while maintaining the appearance of civilization?
Perhaps there are other explanations, but this one certainly fits. Why would they cheer for this? Why would they roll out the carpet and put on a full-Monty Head of State welcome for the President of Mexico, who wants nothing more than to ship up millions more of his illiterate population?
Why do all the Democrats (and some Republicans like McCain--until challenged for his seat) think that an unceasing flow of illegals from Mexico is actually desireable?
Why the refusal to enforce the border?
Something else is at play in all this. Some people here must be making a lot of money, or gathering a great deal of power to themselves, by allowing this chaos to continue. Likewise, some people must have the same motivation south of the border.
People always act from motivation. Without it, there is almost no action.
What is driving this tragic, stupid race over the cultural cliff? What's the motivation?

The admission comes after Attorney General Eric Holder, who earlier warned the law could create a "slippery slope" toward racial profiling, told a House committee last week that he had not read the bill either. On Tuesday, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said he too had not read the bill, even as he defended diplomatic official Michael Posner for comparing the law to Chinese human rights violations.
Remember, these public servants were appointed by the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and the former editor of Harvard Law Review.

Some moments are too good to pass up, and this is one of them. After all the condemnation heaped upon the heads of the folks in Arizona, and threats of civil rights action against them by the Department of Justice, AG Eric Holder admits in testimony before Congress that he hasn't even read the law!
If ever a video should go 'viral', this is one.
This is the sort of nonsense one expects to encounter at a local zoning board meeting in a county somewhere in Appalachia. (Well, no suh', me and Bubba didn't realize that puttin' those dubble-wides on that flood plain would cause no problem. Hell, we didn't even know we wuz s'posed to get no bildin' permits, or look at no maps!)
Except this is the Attorney General of the United States. Our chief law enforcement officer. The one who is supposed render legal opinions for the Executive Branch. The one who is supposed to stand for the law and constitution, and not be a political hack.
And, lest we forget, the guy who appointed him once served as editor of the Harvard Law Review.
Shall we pause and reflect on the treatment recent Republican AG's have received at the hands of the Democrats and the MSM?
If this man is not sent on his way, then the country owes a posthumous apology to Nixon's AG-cum-BagMan, John Mitchell.

The Arizona Illegal Immigration Bill: Read It For Yourself
Here's a reasonable idea to help you sort out fact from fiction in the chaos that has erupted over Arizona's decision to deal with illegal immigration, which the Federal government has refused to do.
Read the bill.
This links you to the Arizona Secretary of State site. Halfway down the list, you'll see the link to CH_113. Click it, and the pdf of the bill as passed and signed will download to you.
Read the bill, and think it over for yourself. Unlike the incomprehensible verbiage we are treated to by bills passed in Congress, this is written in clear English, carefully avoiding nuance. The Arizona legislature, unlike Congress, knew the content and intent of the bill, as a responsible legislative body does. This may explain the rage directed at them by the left side of Congress, born of humiliation.
OS has gone through it once, plans to do it a few more times. At no point does it authorize any agent of law enforcement to detain any person just because they are brown of skin. Furthermore, Governor Brewer signed amendments to clarify the bill's intent. No authorization of mass deportations. No authorization of inhumane treatment of persons detained. No double-talk. Very little 'legal-ese'.
Basic, understandable English.
Read the bill, and decide for yourself.
But, as a starter, here's just the first bit of it--plain English, no spin here:
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:
Section 1. Intent
The legislature finds that there is a compelling interest in the cooperative enforcement of federal immigration laws throughout all of Arizona. The legislature declares that the intent of this act is to make attrition through enforcement the public policy of all state and local government agencies in Arizona. The provisions of this act are intended to work together to discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States.
Could it be, at the end of the day, that the real objection by Our Beloved Leader and the Left is to the intent of the bill: '...to discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States.'?
At the end of the day, neither Obama, nor Bush the Second, nor Clinton, nor Bush the First embrace(d) the idea of enforcing our borders. The assertion that immigration enforcement is a Federal prerogative is simply a means of avoiding responsibility, not embracing it.
This whole mess is not about race. It is about the Constitution and the rule of law. The Federal government has despised both the Constitution and the rule of law, and now has a grassfire on its hands.
The only sense of surprise felt here is that it took so long to get started.
Chin-straps on. Watch for other legislatures to pass similar measures.
It is unfortunate that it has come to this, and there is definitely a human side to this story. Were OS of Hispanic heritage, he would be certain to always carry his driving license, just to be certain. He might even avoid Arizona for a while, just to be doubly certain, while things settle down.
But, give the bill three to five years to work, and it won't be an issue, 'cuz the problem will be greatly alleviated. If enough states follow suit, the solution will arrive more quickly.
Final story: A few years back, Mr. and Mrs. OS spent a fabulous vacation in Canada.
When we arrived at the border in our car, we waited in line, presented passports and title to the car. We were questioned by firm-but-friendly border control officers about where we were traveling, what we were transporting, and when we planned to return home. When changing money, every teller in every bank followed the same script: 'Passport please. When did you arrive? Where are you visiting? When do you plan to depart?' Polite, but firm.
And it was all perfectly fine, 'cuz it's their country, and we were guests visiting there.
We had a wonderful visit, and we came home, where we belong. Where we work, and live, and hold our citizenship. Our country.

OS has gone through it once, plans to do it a few more times. At no point does it authorize any agent of law enforcement to detain any person just because they are brown of skin. Furthermore, Governor Brewer signed amendments to clarify the bill's intent. No authorization of mass deportations. No authorization of inhumane treatment of persons detained. No double-talk. Very little 'legal-ese'.
Basic, understandable English.

But, as a starter, here's just the first bit of it--plain English, no spin here:
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:
Section 1. Intent
The legislature finds that there is a compelling interest in the cooperative enforcement of federal immigration laws throughout all of Arizona. The legislature declares that the intent of this act is to make attrition through enforcement the public policy of all state and local government agencies in Arizona. The provisions of this act are intended to work together to discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States.
Could it be, at the end of the day, that the real objection by Our Beloved Leader and the Left is to the intent of the bill: '...to discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States.'?
At the end of the day, neither Obama, nor Bush the Second, nor Clinton, nor Bush the First embrace(d) the idea of enforcing our borders. The assertion that immigration enforcement is a Federal prerogative is simply a means of avoiding responsibility, not embracing it.
This whole mess is not about race. It is about the Constitution and the rule of law. The Federal government has despised both the Constitution and the rule of law, and now has a grassfire on its hands.
The only sense of surprise felt here is that it took so long to get started.
Chin-straps on. Watch for other legislatures to pass similar measures.
It is unfortunate that it has come to this, and there is definitely a human side to this story. Were OS of Hispanic heritage, he would be certain to always carry his driving license, just to be certain. He might even avoid Arizona for a while, just to be doubly certain, while things settle down.
But, give the bill three to five years to work, and it won't be an issue, 'cuz the problem will be greatly alleviated. If enough states follow suit, the solution will arrive more quickly.
Final story: A few years back, Mr. and Mrs. OS spent a fabulous vacation in Canada.
When we arrived at the border in our car, we waited in line, presented passports and title to the car. We were questioned by firm-but-friendly border control officers about where we were traveling, what we were transporting, and when we planned to return home. When changing money, every teller in every bank followed the same script: 'Passport please. When did you arrive? Where are you visiting? When do you plan to depart?' Polite, but firm.
And it was all perfectly fine, 'cuz it's their country, and we were guests visiting there.
We had a wonderful visit, and we came home, where we belong. Where we work, and live, and hold our citizenship. Our country.
