The culture shapes the economy long before the economy shapes the culture. Where should we devote our energies?

Lt. Jack Volz, KIA IN 1943, Finally Laid To Rest In Louisville This Weekend
For those who scratch their heads, and wonder what America is about, and what makes America tick, OldSouth shares this story from the Louisville Courier-Journal:
Army Air Forces 1st Lt. Jack E. Volz, a World War II aviator declared dead a year and a day after his B-24 Liberator went missing in the South Pacific in 1943, will be laid to rest with full military honors Saturday at Cave Hill Cemetery.
Volz’s remains will arrive from Hawaii just before noon Thursday at Louisville International Airport, where a military honor squad will escort him to a hearse that will make the trip to Ratterman’s Funeral Home in St. Matthews.
“It’s such a special miracle,” said niece Marilyn Simonds, 63.
Volz, 21, and his crew and plane vanished on Oct. 27, 1943. Sixty years later, in 2003, someone who had passed by the wreckage in Papua, New Guinea and picked up Volz’s identification card turned it over to a Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command team, which located the crash site in 2005.
In early 2007, after the Army obtained DNA samples from family members, the crash site was excavated and the remains were taken to Hawaii.
After the matches were confirmed, the Army sat with the family, presenting some three hundred pages of evidence that these remains were indeed those of Lt. Volz, and arranged for the funeral at one of the great historic cemeteries of the country. A portion of his remains will also be interred with the remains of his crew in Arlington Cemetery in August.
Lt. Volz was one of millions of young lives cut short by the utter madness of collectivist, utopian and nation-as-religion monsters of the twentieth century. But in America, the sacrifice he made to help set things right is not forgotten. Here is an opportunity, in some small way, to redeem this tragedy, and to remind ourselves and the world who we all are when we are at our best.
Here's hoping, and encouraging, that many will take the time to pay their respects at the funeral home and cemetery tomorrow, to give the young man a fitting welcome home.
The funeral home is here.
Cave Hill Cemetery is here.

Walgreen's, Winner Of The 2011 'Let No Good Deed Go Unpunished' Award
Really, just can't make this stuff up.
From the Detroit Free Press, recounting the heroic actions of a Walgreen's pharmacist who repelled armed robbers, and likely saved several innocent lives.
May 10, 2011
BENTON TOWNSHIP -- They wore masks.
They wore gloves.
They brandished handguns.
But there was one thing two robbers didn't anticipate when they barged into a Benton Township Walgreens drugstore early Sunday and tried to march workers into the back room: A worker already in back carried a handgun and knew how to use it.
Township police Lt. Delmar Lange said the worker fired multiple shots at one of the bandits, forcing the men to flee.
"He could see the hostage situation developing," Lange said. "He could not retreat any farther. He was in the back room. If it was me, I would have done the same thing."
Lange said the worker, whose name was not released, saw one of the robbers force another worker from the front of the building toward the rear. That robber then saw the worker in back and started to pursue him.
The worker then fired multiple shots.
The robber tried to fire back, but his gun malfunctioned. The robber and his partner ran out.
Lange said none of the four workers was hurt in the 4:30 a.m. incident in the store at Napier Avenue and M-139.
It's a story of selfless courage--the pharmacist could have been killed. In these situations, often no innocent person emerges alive, once herded into the back of the store. No witnesses, no way to prosecute effectively, and hey--who's gonna get worked up about a couple-a-thugz knocking over a Walgreen's anyhow? Just go ahead and kill 'em all.
Now, in a sane situation, the gent would receive the heartfelt thanks of corporate HQ, a bonus quietly tucked into his pocket, a raise, and a couple of weeks off at the company beach house, to gather his wits about him.
However, to quote John Belushi: But, NOOOOOOOOOO!
Walgreen's fired his ass! That'll motivate the rest of the employees to go that extra mile for the customer...Pharmacist John Hoven found out the hard way that some companies never let good deeds go unpunished. But, at least he's still alive, as are the others who were in the store that early morning.
That also is equivalent to setting a billboard up over every Walgreen's that announces: Hey ya'll! If you wanna walk in here with guns and rob this store, terrorize and kill people, come-on-in, bubbah! Ain't no one gonna give yew a bit of worry!
Out of concern for his safety, OS will be avoiding Walgreen's in the future. Notice how many of these stores are in dodgy locations (cheap real estate), and how easily someone with bad intentions could walk in, hide out for a few minutes, and then wreak havoc, given the store layout?
There are other pharmacies out there, and many grocery stores now have pharmacies.
If'n ya'll feel inspired to share your feelings and future shopping plans, John Lott shares this email address with us: consumerrelations.bb@walgreens.com
Hey-lookie-here: Walgreen's has a customer service link on its site!
Shoot-farh! They even got a phone number, that they pay for, to field customer inquiries and opinions. Isn't that handy! 1-877-250-5823
Now, these horses-asses won't actually respond to the complaints, not until they notice that their stores have emptied of customers, or a few customers end up getting shot because Walgreen's doesn't consider them worth defending. It will take either financial bleeding, or customers bleeding, to rouse them from their sleep.
OS ain't volunteering as a customer no moh'.

Now, What We Really Lack Are Criminal Prosecutions Of Criminal Acts: Utah Begins To Confront BofA
Finally, one state AG located his spine. Finally.
The vision of Utah State Troopers hauling BofA out of their offices in New York and Charlotte, into the vans, and onto a state-chartered airplane does hold a certain appeal.
Make them miss their tee times, for say, the next fifteen years. Sobriety might just make a return visit to the banking industry.
If small businessmen or ordinary citizens act with such utter contempt of law or decency, they are out of business at least, and risk jail. Apart from Madoff, who turned himself in, have we seen any criminal prosecutions flow from the 2007-2008 debacle?
We're not there yet, but one AG, somewhere, will step up before too long, as the real damage to the economy and culture really set in, and the extent and shamelessness of the screwing administered this country become more apparent.

In Contrast To Wisconsin, Ohio, illinois, California: Tennessee Legislature Passes The Budget Unanimously (with 3.9% spending cuts), And Goes Home
Really, ya'll. It can happen.
The November 2010 election mattered in Tennessee. The teacher's union had its wings clipped. The legislature cut spending, still leaving in some favored programs, and extra money for disaster relief.
Then they adjourned, and went home. Refreshing, is it not?
The Senate passed a $30.8 billion budget on Saturday, making it a clean sweep in the Tennessee General Assembly, with both chambers unanimously approving a budget that could have easily been a contentious battle given the state’s economic constraints.
The House approved the budget 96-0 on Friday.
Republican Gov. Bill Haslam and lawmakers benefited from recent revenue increases that allowed Haslam to restore many cuts that mattered most to Democrats, and in the end the bill was still roughly 3.9 percent less than the previous year’s budget. The state is constitutionally obligated to pass a balanced budget.
Haslam, in his first year as governor, had stated relentlessly during his campaign that the state was going to suffer massive losses of federal economic stimulus money, and his estimates on that count proved fairly accurate. All told, the state will have about $1.8 billion less in federal funds than a year ago, and of that total about $1.4 billion was attributed to the loss of stimulus funds.
Haslam, like his predecessor, Bredesen, comes from a business background, and understands math. He is a conservative, but not an ideologue.
In many previous years, with many more Democrats in the legislature demanding more spending on every pet project, or split control amongst the parties, budget battles would last until midnight July 3. The reviled Don Sundquist lied in 2000 about proposing an income tax, demanded it in 2001, and Legislative Plaza filled with thousands of truly pissed-off voters. Sundquist sent in the troopers on horseback to break them up, to no avail. Bredesen didn't even bring the subject up during his tenure.
All those folks, and many more, showed up to vote in 2004, 2006 and 2010. Especially 2010, after a two-year dose of LifeUnderObama.
Tennessee runs balanced budgets. Tennessee has noooooo income tax.
Tennessee has myriad problems, to be sure, but OS would not trade problems with Illinois for anything.

As OS Predicted, DSK And His Homies Are Pursuing The Maid's Family Out The Second Cousins Back In Africa
Not amazing, really, but--shall we say, breathlessly brazen?
Friends of alleged hotel sex fiend Dominique Strauss-Kahn secretly contacted the accusing maid's impoverished family, offering them money to make the case go away since they can't reach her in protective custody, The Post has learned.
The woman, who says she was sexually assaulted by the disgraced former head of the International Monetary Fund, has an extended family in the former French colony of Guinea in West Africa, well out of reach of the Manhattan DA's Office.
"They already talked with her family," a French businesswoman with close ties to Strauss-Kahn and his family told The Post. "For sure, it's going to end up on a quiet note."
Large numbers being bandied about, don't-cha-know. Seven figures, bubbah! But how do deliver a seven-figure bribe to a remote African village with no electricity?
There will be demands for change of venue, to Arkansas, perhaps. Reasoning is, they may not like French people much there, but they really hate African people.
If convicted, endless appeals.
And the stories about the maid will become more scurrilous.
She has a child, and she'll hear that DSK and his Socialist colleagues have very very very long memories...will the DA be around to protect them in 5/10/20 years, hmmm?
Eventually, members of family back in the village may begin departing this vale of tears.
Some quiet contributions to 'charities' of the governor, and a quiet pardon in the final hours of his term.
OS can already hear the Gulfstream warming up on the tarmac in New Jersey.
Let us sincerely hope OS is dead wrong on this.

Delingpole Sees Through Obama's Irish Malarkey
President Teleprompter is trying to get that Reagan magic thing going, ya'll. Really, after all those years of SouthSideChicagoStreetTalk (especially when he thinks the cameras and mics are off...) he declares his True Identity! He's Irish, after all.
Delingpole takes Himself apart in fine style.
Enjoy.

Bebe Netanyahu Not Mincing Words With Congress
OS is hip deep in work, and is checking in on Bebe's speech.
Lots of enthusiasm at first from the audience, but as he gets to the heart of the question--the right of Israel to exist, and the Arab intransigence on that question--OS sees more and more members of Congress only giving perfunctory applause, checking to see if the camera has pointed in their direction.
It is very plain to see, that along with Obama, many of those folks would love to see Israel thrown under the bus.
Why yes, it would be a tragedy you know, all those millions slaughtered, etc. etc. etc. but in the end perhaps it's for the best...(the mental wheels are turning...)
Can we get away with it? After all, Cambodia became a killing field and we're all still here and got away with it. All those boat people who decamped for Hong Kong, well, they're a distant memory. All those Eastern Europeans left to slavery by Roosevelt, well, it was necessary you know. The tide of history and all. All those millions of Chinese we sold off to Mao, well, it was unfortunate, but we get cheap iPads now, so it all comes out in the wash. All those Poles, Baltic peoples, the Armenians, well it's unfortunate but we just had to cut them loose.
Bebe isn't giving them the luxury of that line of thought. The stony faces make that evident. They want this over, and him to get the hell out of town.
Moh', latuh.
And, as a special grin for the day, the thought that President Teleprompter, for whom Truth does not exist, gets to follow this performance when he addresses the House of Commons in London.
Good luck with that, Barry!

The Ruins Of The Detroit Train Station, In 360 Degree Panorama
Mish Shedlock just posted the link to this shocking tour of what has become of one of the great landmarks of the United States.
Click here to begin the photo tour.
It is not for the faint of heart, and if you wish to shield the kids from profanity, wait until they are in another room. The graffiti is vulgar in the extreme. (Remember all those self-impressed academic asses who tried to convince us that graffiti is an art form??? Rubens was an artist. The rabble who invade this architectural gem and spray it with their filth are vandals.)
OS had to hold back the tears as he viewed the photo gallery, and abandoned it after a few minutes. Too much else to be doing, and he doesn't need his mind clouded with the grief and anger.
This is what Socialism, banksters, and rule by the Democrat Party for decades, has produced. They all have to go. Firmly, politely, legally, non-violently--they must all be shown the door.

Osama's Dead, And John Walker Lindh Is Still In Prison...
...because he's guilty.
His dad thinks he's a victim. Riiiight....
The CIA officer murdered in his presence (and the man's family) should be afforded the label of 'victim'. People who participate in murder are traditionally regarded as 'criminals'.
And, even in the Age of Obama (post-Clinton), there remains a huge percentage of the population who still adhere to those traditional (if oh-so, well, antiquated) notions of language. They'll never get the invite to Sean Penn's cocktail parties, but on the whole, that's a good trade-off.
With Little Johnny (who prefers to be known as Abu Sulayman al-Irlandi) in the pokey, we all know where he is, and he's very unlikely to bear arms against the United States whilst there.
He's fortunate to have been arrested under US law, which afforded him all the rights guaranteed by the Constitution he despises and wishes to overthrow.
In an Islamic-run setting, such as Saudi Arabia, Libya, Iran, Syria (need we continue?), young Johnny would have been executed (after extensive torture). In his case, in the United States, he was able to negotiate a plea bargain which gutted his victim's family. Again.
Enjoy prison, Johnny--it beats the Sharia alternative you so ardently seek.

Encore In Honor of Dominique Strauss-Kahn: Clarke And Dawes Explain The European Debt Crisis
Since this brilliant bit first appeared ten months ago, a lot of historical water has flowed under the proverbial bridge, in Ireland, Finland, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, North Africa, and one penthouse in New York City. (And, let's not forget Mr. Berlusconi and his seventeen-year-old love interest...just the kinda guy t'be running a large country, don't-cha-know!)
