Rhambo Attempts To Strong-Arm The Banks: Note The Reaction To The News

The  CBS affiliate in Chicago reports that Mayor Emmanuel of Chicago is attempting a Gino-and-Vito attack on banks who do business with gun manufacturers.

Basically, he's telling them to knuckle under to the Obama regime's all-out war on any part of a legitimate industry they wish to control or destroy.

itoThe mayor is urging that banks to stop lines of credit, financing for acquisitions and expansions and financial advising.
In a letter sent Friday to the CEOs of Bank Of America and TD Bank, Emanuel said: “In the past, the gun industry has stood in opposition to these safety measures. They opposed a ban on assault weapons on America’s streets, opposed a ban on military-style clips, opposed a criminal background check on all gun purchases and opposed any effort to crack down on criminal gun traffickers.”
It's the classic Chicago Shakedown: Gino and Vito show up at the local shop on the corner, at the behest of the mayor or mob (really, in Chicago, it's the same thing), and the conversation goes like this:
'Hello, there! I'm Gino, and this is my associate Vito! We're here on behalf of Hizonner to solicit your support in the upcoming election. Why of course we want your vote, but we're talkin' something more, you know, TANGIBLE as an expression of your support, right Vito? You know, Vito, this is such a nice business he's got goin' here, and small business is the backbone of this great country of ours, isn't it Vito? It would be a SHAME if someone were to set it on fire and the fire department not get here in time!
Yeah, Gino, that would be a shame!
Why, thank you! We'll put you down for a fifty-dollar contribution. And we'll be back next week for the next fifty dollars. We want to make sure you're nice and safe, right Vito?
Yeah, Gino, that's right!'
So, to OldSouth, Hizzoner's attempts at extortion are not really news.
What is news are the reader comments following the story. Remember, this is Chicago, Obama's home town, and most of the commenters appear to be locals. The language is vociferous in opposition to the mayor.
Himself and Company may be walking into a buzz-saw of bitter opposition...
One can only hope. Guns aren't the issue here.
Freedom is. And that includes the ability to do business free of the threat of extortion by politicians.

Dean Gary Hall: Wearing A Collar Doesn't Immunize Him From Being A Self-Righteous Ass

OS, in his mis-spent youth, was once an Episcopalian. The Prayer Book (as composed by Cranmer) is such a masterful work of both theology and worship.

The leadership of the denomination stripped the churches of it, replacing it with a pale reflection that reads like a list of OSHA regulations.

The Episcopal Church once stood for the broad, judicious middle of the religious culture of the country. After all, it was the church that Washington frequented.

The leadership pulled it to the looney left, never to return. They realized they could hijack all those assets, stripping congregations that protested of the real estate and buildings they had worked so hard over the years to acquire for their parishes. All those bequests, generating all that cash, just there for the taking.

OS left upon being told, in 1988, from the pulpit, by the bishops, that it was his Christian duty to vote for Walter Mondale and the Democrat Party.

When. Hades. Turns. Into. An. Ice. Rink.

So, this piece of drivel washed up on the news today, with the Dean of Washington Cathedral standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Dianne Feinstein, telling us that God told him that it's ok to strip Americans of their freedoms, one bit at a time.

As Sen. Dianne Feinstein D-Calif. opened her press conference on gun control today, she invited Dean of the National Cathedral Rev. Canon Gary Hall to offer a prayer.
Hall spoke briefly before the prayer, calling for Washington lawmakers to stop fearing the gun lobby and fulfill their “moral duty” to restrict guns.
"Everyone in this city seems to live in terror of the gun lobby," Hall said. "But I believe that the gun lobby is no match for the cross lobby."

Heretical. Ass. Hole. In. A. Collar.

When. Hades. Turns. Into. An. Ice. Rink. will OS register one weapon.

The 'Gun Violence Epidemic', Brought To You By Barack Obama

One hardly knows where to begin, so OS decided he should begin by actually looking up and reading the documents Himself signed today.

He's just getting underway.

The first one seems to be more about coordinating the information at hand into the NICS criminal identification system.

Standard stuff--form committees, issue memos, burn money, issue press releases, burn money, go on research junkets to London, burn money, hold conferences in warm locations, deliver papers, listen to papers being delivered, burn money.

The second one borders on the bizarre:

In addition to being a law enforcement challenge, gun violence is also a serious public health issue that affects thousands of individuals, families, and communities across the Nation. Each year in the United States there are approximately 30,000 firearm-related deaths, and approximately 11,000 of those deaths result from homicides. Addressing this critical issue requires a comprehensive, multifaceted approach.

Recent research suggests that, in developing such an approach, a broader public health perspective is imperative. Significant strides can be made by assessing the causes of gun violence and the successful efforts in place for preventing the misuse of firearms. Taking these steps will improve our understanding of the gun violence epidemic and will aid in the continued development of gun violence prevention strategies.

The language sounds high-flown and noble, unless it is actually read.

Influenza is a public health issue, like smallpox once was. There was an influenza epidemic in 1918-1920 which killed millions.  A real virus was transmitted person-to-person which created sickness for 500 million, and death for some 20 million.

That, friends and neighbors, is an epidemic.

People committing violent crime with any sort of weapon  is not an epidemic-it's delinquent behavior. To even utter the phrase 'gun violence epidemic' is a crime against the English language, against moral sensibility, against common sense.

This is Orwellian DoubleSpeak, pure and simple. Think back to Bill Clinton's famous summation of his presidency: 'It Depends Upon What Your Definition Of "Is" Is'. Words have no objective meaning, but are sounds produced in order to get one's way today.

'Gun violence epidemic'.

There is no such thing.

There are, however, amoral thugs with all manner of weapons, guns included, who fear neither God nor man. They are responsible for over five hundred murders in Obama's home turf of Chicago in 2012. Baltimore, Detroit, Philly, D.C, New Orleans...the list goes on. All of them strongholds of the Democrat Party power base, all of them killing fields for the citizens.

And, today, the mayors of those cities gathered in Charleston to hear and cheer Joe Biden as he lectured the rest of us on why we should all be disarmed.

Take a few minutes, listen at the link...

Joe also dismissed any plans to have armed guards in schools by declaring 'We don't want rent-a-cops in schools'. Ass. Hole.

Williamson County Tennessee, blessedly, won't be heeding his advice.

'Gun violence epidemic' indeed.

Welcome To 2013, And Hang On To Your Hats: Gunshops Are Packed Out

The good news as we woke up yesterday morning was: Congress, unwilling to watch the markets drop 20% on Wednesday, cobbled together and passed a bill to keep the government running.

The bad news as we woke up yesterday morning was: Congress, unwilling to watch the markets drop 20% on Wednesday, cobbled together and passed a bill to keep the government running.

On another note, Mr. and Mrs. OS purchased a new automobile late last week, and drove to the dealership to pick it up, in a suburban location north of Nashville. Typical suburban small-town, gas station followed by restaurant followed by hardware store followed by gun shop.

Gun shop. Holy cow. The parking lot is jammed, and the store is filled...

Holy Cow.

Bob Owens,  a knowledgeable writer on the subject of firearms and firearms law, etc. posted much the same report. Only he went into the store, to find it had been cleaned out by purchasers.

Gulp.

In a related incident, OS visited a pawn shop in Louisville a few weeks ago, before the Newtown atrocity, to find people from the poor black neighborhood nearby purchasing inexpensive 9 mm pistols for home defense. One 60+ year-old gent explaining, 'I've got to protect my little grandbaby from the home invaders'. The salesman explained that, with a pistol at that sub-200 dollar price point, reliability may be a big issue, which could prove very dangerous for the purchaser. The old gent replied, 'I can't afford that four-hundred dollar model, I'll have to take my chances.'

Holy Moly.

OS fears bloodshed, the operative word being 'fears'. All nerves seem to be on edge, from all corners.

If you are one of those new gun owners, OS urges four things:

1. Join the NRA. Today. Even if you don't own a gun, join to support those millions of responsible owners.

2. Get training, both in markmanship, behavior, and the law. Every county in every state with a concealed-carry-permit law has several good law enforcement officers who offer training. No excuse not to get trained. It is a safety issue, for you and everyone around you. The TV shows make pistol marksmanship look easy, but that is pure fiction. It is not an easy thing to place a  group of shots in an acceptably tight circle from twenty yards, or ten, or five--especially for a novice in a stressful situation. Bullets that miss hit people.

3. Practice. Regularly. Preferably at a range with an instructor. This is a learned skill, not a magic trick. Read, stay informed. And practice. If you are not willing to practice, you are not a good candidate for ownership.

4. Safety first. One of OS's early childhood memories is of his next-door neighbor, a police detective with two young boys in the home. Every evening, he would come home, unholster his service revolver, empty the chamber. The shells went into a dish above the reach of the boys on the mantle, and the revolver was placed in a closed china cabinet, out of reach of the boys. 'Nuff said?

And finally--there are people who should never be allowed to handle deadly weapons.  OS can immediately think of five homes where no guns should be in residence. Period.

Your home may be one of them.

Memo From Birmingham UK To all Gun Control Advocates

Sometimes, it has to be said in ways that even a moron like Sheila Jackson-Lee can understand it.

If'n yew take awllll the guns away frum the law-abidin' citizen'ry, and don't allow officers to carry sidearmz inter dang'rous siteashuns, then yew gets organized groops uf young hoodie-wearing rioters shooting live ammo from their sidearmz at the police and law-abidin' citizen'ry.

Criminalz don't pay no heed to gun-control laws--deyz CRIMINALS!! Dey da bad peepuhls, and the shop owners and pub owners who try to defend themselves with baseball bats against gangs of criminals armed with guns--dems da good peepuhls.

In CNN-speak:

(CNN) -- Police have released dramatic security camera footage they say shows masked and hooded rioters firing shots at unarmed officers and a police helicopter in the English city of Birmingham.

They hope the public will come forward with information as they investigate the violence that took place amid widespread rioting earlier this month.

The footage shows a group of 30 to 40 young men, dressed in black, in the Newtown area of Birmingham as they attacked a pub late on Tuesday August 9, West Midlands Police said in a statement.

As police tried to disperse the group, petrol bombs were thrown at a police car and shots were fired, police said. Officers believe the rioters intended to set fire to the pub.

Chief Constable Chris Sims said the incident was being treated as attempted murder and arson.

Video of the rioting, which is sickening to watch, at the link.

22 Shot In Chicago In One Day--No One In Custody Yet

H/T Marathon Pundit, the excellent Chicago-land blogger.

Life has been lively in ObamaLand, with 22 people shot in multiple incidents, and no one in custody yet.

At least 22 people were wounded in separate shootings around the city roughly between noon Saturday and noon Sunday, including a man who died this morning after he was shot in the head, Chicago police said.

At a news conference this morning, Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis said that nearly half of the shootings appear to be gang-related, including the fatal incident. Weis added that at least two of the other victims have refused to cooperate with police, "which makes the job of our detectives ... far more difficult."

One of the shootings was particularly disturbing because one of the female victims was eight months pregnant, the superintendent said.

No one in custody for any of the incidents.

For those not familiar with Chicago, there is a strict hand-gun ban in place. Which means, of course, that law-abiding citizens who understandably don't wish to get sideways with the criminal justice system don't own handguns. And thugs, who care not a fig for the rule of anyone's law, do have them.

Hmmm....and if the armed thugs outnumber the police, and have the law-abiding types in the neighborhoods terrorized, what happens to the culture of the city?

Again, let's remember, this is the place from which President Obama rose to power. This is the culture and model of governance he knows. He steadfastly supports gun bans for the law-abiding.

Do we wish the Chicago model of governance, which produces this sort of outcome, exported to all fifty states, their counties, cities, and towns?

And, as a reminder, Chicago has been run for decades by...
