OS posted a full essay a year ago in honor of the day, and he's gratified to see it still attracting a steady stream of readers.
We need people of that mettle and spirit now, because the danger is at least as great. In 1940, Hitler's bombers could be spotted, attacked, downed, and chased away.
Those who seek to destroy the culture now sit in our seats of power.
Heaven aid and protect us all, on both sides of the pond.
The culture shapes the economy long before the economy shapes the culture. Where should we devote our energies?

15 September, 1940: The Day The RAF Saved Civilization
Not much celebrated in the US, sadly. We wouldn't be here, sitting at our desks with our coffee cups, had it not been for those gallant boys, and the fabulous spirit of the country that stood behind them.
The account of the morning's action is here. There were three waves of attacks, and you need only click 'next page' at the bottom of each account to continue the narrative.
Also not much noted is the presence of some brave young American lads who had volunteered for the RAF, in defiance of US law at the time. They flew Hurricanes from Debden, and were amongst the flyers scrambled that day. Later on, they were attached to the US Army Air Force, and flew the P-51, eventually destroying 1000 aircraft of the Luftwaffe.
15 September 1940 was the turning point of the war, although only Goering knew it at the time, and would not admit it until later. Britain could not be bullied into submission by bombing, and any attempt at invasion would have been suicidal. The Brits of the 1940's were not about to stand for another invasion from Normandy.
God bless the RAF. May Providence grant us a double portion their spirit for our day.
