The culture shapes the economy long before the economy shapes the culture. Where should we devote our energies?

JDA Missed Her Calling
She should have been a preacher.
Really.
Sample this bit below, in which she illuminates the pronouncements of the luminaries who assure us that all is well.
Regulatory uncertainty has pretty much assured the employment situation will remain sketchy for the foreseeable future, or at least until we figure out the true real-world impact of genius moves like Obamacare, financial reform, consumer protection and accounting rule changes implemented in the midst of crisis as a direct result of the impact of old rules on the economy. That's called having to pay for that hamburger on Tuesday that you borrowed money for last week in case you aren't paying attention.
Banks are still clinging to crap assets and functioning as official money laundering machine for the US Treasury by borrowing money at 0 from Uncle Bernanke and stuffing it into Treasurys. That's all well and good but what happens if Bernanke grows a pair, hikes up interest rates and takes away the crack? How are banks going to breeze through new Basel capital requirements then?
I don't know about you all but I can't drive more than a block through San Francisco or any of our lovely Bay Area 'burbs without seeing vacant, for lease, for sale or otherwise "available" properties. Were I to try and come up with an estimate as to just how many I see on an average stroll through town I'd have to guess somewhere between a metric shit ton and a massive fuck ton, it's hard to say.
Is that a recovery? Does it feel like a recovery? Does it look like a recovery?
A recovery would imply a return to normal. Free money from the Fed is not normal. 10% unemployment is not normal. 99 weeks of unemployment is not normal. .1% returns on savings or CDs are not normal. Riots, protests, rallies and general civil unrest (be it mild at this point) are not normal. Trading volume of practically nothing for anyone except for HFT robots, hedge funds and the invisible hand is not normal.
Someone needs to get the Fed that memo so they can stop with this nonsense and I'd love to see their senior economists coming up with something far more useful than the same HOORAH WE'RE SAVED propaganda we have all heard and read since March of 2009.
You'll have to read the essay to get to her payoff line. Wouldn't wish to spoil it for you.
She's the wonderfullest when she gets her preacher on.
Really.

JDA's Exactly On Point: Racing To The Bottom, Spending Like Madmen, No Teaching Or Learning
JDA does have a way with words.
Oh well, I say let them ruin the school system for cash, it's not like it could get any worse than it already is. American kids are lazy, fat and completely stupid. This is nothing new, I deal with college-educated people on a daily basis who cannot handle even the simplest task such as operating a telephone or writing an email that uses complete, coherent sentences.
In other words, we're doomed.
Of course, as a parent I realize that it is not up to my child's school to teach him but instead know that is my responsibility and school is little more than a playground for his social skills and preparation for a 9 - 5 when he gets older. It's free daycare for Mommy while she's out being a good little capitalist and every now and then he learns something useful to supplement what I've taught him. Too many parents are just as if not more lazy than their lazy ass idiot kids and assume it's up to the schools to do the educating. I guess in order to educate your children you have to have half a brain yourself so there goes that.

If Only They Were Joking!
From JDA:
Convert Your Tax Refund into More Debt for the Treasury
Really, to quote Jeff Foxworthy, 'I can't make this stuff up!'.
As always, JDA gives the account of the latest folly of ThePeopleInChargeOfSuchThings with high spirits and fabulous humor.
Friends, if she's not a regular part of your reading, you're missing out.

Checking In With Jesse and JDA
OS is up to his keister in different pieces of paper that need to go in different directions, and everyone tells him that their piece of paper is the most crucial.
On top of that, one of his students has ended up in the ER, and the frantic mom is making the five-hour drive now. Send one up for J, if you would.
But, the day isn't complete without five minutes checking in with Jesse and JDA.
Something is seriously awry (actually a lot is seriously awry), and the ability of the Fed to continue to print and pump may be drawing to a close, finally. OS has stopped buying, and is willing to take his lumps on what he holds, 'cuz rain or shine, those firms will still be with us in five years or so.
This from Jesse:
The average person buys when they should sell, and sells when they should buy. Often they buy or sell when they should do nothing. The Wall Street insiders and their demimonde frequently help them to do this. That is how things are, and now moreseo than before because of the shrinking pools of exploitable non-banking capital and the lack of financial reforms.
And, for grins, this from JDA...
Too, too funny.
