Bless him, he brought us all such joy and gentle good humor. The cast of characters in his shows were so loved, because they so resembled people we love in our small-town Southern lives. Sheriff Andy kept order by moral suasion, by the constant appeal to everyone's better angels.
Yes, it was fiction. But this fiction made all our lives better, reminded us of who we might be.
